OVID DROPS Z39.50 SUPPORT; ENDNOTE
SEARCHING NO LONGER AVAILABLE
Use of EndNote software to search and download records directly
from Texshare, UT System and UT Austin OVID databases has
been possible over the last several years because both EndNote
and OVID supported a connection type known as "Z39.50".
OVID's latest update to its server software no longer supports
Z39.50 connections. The new software is scheduled to
debut with Texshare Select databases (CINAHL, MLA Bibliography)
in early August and UT System/UT Austin databases (BIOSIS,
INSPEC, International Pharmaceutical Abstracts, MEDLINE, PsycINFO,
Public Affairs Information Service) in mid August. Once
this happens, it will no longer be possible to search these
OVID databases with EndNote software. For this reason,
the connection files previously available at this URL have
been removed.
As the Texshare and UT System OVID databases transition to
the new OVID software, a different EndNote related feature
will become available. This feature will enable simplified
exporting of OVID citations. The feature is known as
Direct Export and will be available within the larger Citation
Manager box at the bottom of each results page.
When using the Direct Export format in the Citation Manager,
OVID sends the results to your browser as the "application/x-bibliographic"
MIME type. It is possible in all recent versions of
Explorer, Navigator and Opera web browsers to associate this
MIME type with your bibliographic citation software (ie. instruct
the browser to launch your Endnote, Reference Manager or Procite
software when it encounters files encoded with the "application/x-bibliographic"
MIME type). By doing this, when you hit SAVE
with the Direct Export format your search results will download
directly into EndNote, Reference Manager or Procite.
The export format is compatible with EndNote 4, Procite 3,
4 or 5 and Reference Manager 7, 8 or 9.
