Introduction
The University of Texas System Digital Libraries/Border Cultures
Collection Project seeks to make available to the people of
Texas - with emphasis on public and higher education - digitized
versions of documents, manuscripts, photographs, video and
audio recordings, and exhibits that collectively depict the
richness and diversity of the cultures that developed along
the Texas/Mexico border.
This digitized library of materials will be designed to be
useful to a broad audience ranging from elementary school
children to graduate students at institutions of higher education.
The Border Cultures Collection Project will be an ongoing
initiative coordinated by the University of Texas System Telecommunications
and Information Technology Division and involve contributors
that include public school teachers, faculty, and a range
of schools, public libraries, and institutions of higher education.
Content
The Border Cultures Collection will be hierarchical in nature.
The first level will consist of information suitable for elementary
school students. The last level will consist of original source
information suitable for use in advanced scholarly research.
Each section of the Border Cultures Collection library will
contain lesson plans or syllabi that can be used for a variety
of audiences from elementary through graduate-level. The Collection
will cover a range of formats (books, manuscripts, exhibits,
interviews, video, audio) and subjects (art, language and
literature, music, the sciences, and social studies).
Development of Content
The Border Cultures Collection will be developed following
standards and protocols established by the project principals.
Each participating institution will create and "own"
whatever it creates. Because the Border Cultures Collection
will be virtual, it will not matter where the information
resides or in how many different locations.
The Border Cultures Collection Newsletter
The Newsletter contains information on the variety
of projects planned and underway and the groups involved.
